Our Story

Digna Irafay

Founder
Wilhelmina Nature (WH Nature)

Wilhelmina Nature (WH Nature) was founded out of a deep concern for the widening gap between communities and the governance of natural resources in Tanzania. Across the country, people living in ecologically important areas face growing environmental pressures yet often lack access to conservation support, inclusive decision-making, or sustainable economic opportunities.

Our organization emerged to address this imbalance and to create a platform where local knowledge and expertise, community leadership, and environmental stewardship could come together. We believe that sustainable development on nature restoration and preservation must be rooted in equity, meaningful participation, and care for both people and the planet.

The inspiration behind our name comes from Wilhelmina, the late grandmother of our founder, Digna Umali Irafay. Her commitment to learning, her love for nature, and her strength as a matriarch continue to guide our values and purpose. Her legacy is a reminder of the critical role that women, elders, and families play in sustaining the wellbeing of land and life.

From these personal roots, WH Nature has grown into an organization driven by a clear vision: to help communities, businesses, and ecosystems thrive in harmony. We support the development of inclusive, sustainable land and natural resource governance models that align with national priorities and internationally recognized environmental, social, and health and safety standards.

We operate at the intersection of environmental protection and economic opportunity, blending local action with national and international engagement, and tradition with innovation. Through collaboration, we aim to build a future where Tanzanians are empowered as guardians of their landscapes and beneficiaries of their resources.
